ECA notes:
– Based on a newspaper article from the Boston Post, dated May 1, 1879, Emil Carlsen was scouting the coast of Gloucester, MA to finish a painting of a large marine back on his easel at the studio. We believe this to be the painting he was working on. This painting may have been started as early as 1877 or 1878 since the sky closely resembles a that of a painting dated ca.1877 (Sailing ship near a rocky coast). Carlsen was working for engravers during this period in his life to supplement his teaching and sales income. He lost his studio after an auction of 30 of his paintings did not make enough to cover the cost of the auction. The coastline, we believe, shows the original 1832 Eastern Point Lighthouse in the distance (painting center right on the cliff top) before it was replaced with a brick structure in 1880. The unusual shape of the mounded anvil-like base of the lighthouse appears to be the same one in the painting.

…”S. Emil Carlsen is making coast studies about Gloucester for a large picture he has on the easel.”…
