ECA notes:
– Carlsen is recorded as studying under French artist Antoine Vollon (1833-1900) in Paris around 1891. Emil returns to New York from Paris the same year and begins his “Classical” period. His work over the next fifteen plus years owes much to Vollon’s dark palette and backgrounds, themes and compositions. Carlsen’s work could easily be confused with Vollon’s of the same time period. It would take Carlsen more than fifteen years to shake off Vollon’s influence before meeting Weir and synthesizing earlier influences with Weir’s color palette to create Carlsen’s own original American Impressionist style.
– Condition report : Oil on canvas, canvas is not lined. Surface: In generally good condition aside from scattered, faint craquelure and stretcher bar marks. There are 4 small patches on the reverse. UNDER UV: A few scattered dots of inpainting, four of which correspond to the patches on the reverse. Work presents nicely and is ready to hang.
