ECA notes:
– Condition: Scattered retouch, craquelure, minor paint losses, surface grime.
– An additional frame accompanies the lot; it bears a label from Swain’s Art Store, Plainfield, New Jersey, on the reverse.
– Painted by the artist in New York City or Falls Village, CT, possibly in the last week in December, 1896, and using the same bunch of flowers for two other paintings in the first week of January, 1897. This configuration was used by Carlsen when he wanted to get the most out of flowers. He would start by painting the flowers fresh standing in a vase. Then he would use the flowers in a vase drooping, often some put along side the vase. Finally, he would lay them all down bunch up. This painting was the last in the series since they are more open and dropping their pedals then the other two related paintings. This was most probably dated 1896 (the last week in December, 1896) and the other two paintings which were started before this work are dated 1897 because Carlsen always took longer to finish more elaborate compositions of metalware and hence those are signed 1897.
