ECA Notes:
– Sent directly from private collector via email 2014 for attribution from the Emil Carlsen Archives [ECA].
– Date based on known time of the steam ship ca.1875-1883.
– The steamship Eclipse traveled from London, England to Polar waters. Captain David Gray reported on his travels and the illegal killing of seals while he was crabbing in the sea in 1875-1877. He most probably was in Denmark when he reported on the incident. Carlsen painted the ship most probably when he was there. Based on the accounts of the captain, Carlsen may have been in Denmark in March.
