ECA notes:
– Condition report : Lined, prominent craquelure, tenting (primarily to the lower third), minor surface grime. [2020]
– Carlsen may have painted this over a Christmas vacation with his family in 1908 or 1909 in preparation for his Bauer-Folsom Galleries show held in April of 1909. The light shown in the paintings would match December/January. -ECA

– It is likely that this painting was part of the Bauer-Folsom Galleries exhibition of 1909 and may not have sold based on the date it was framed or reframed in 1974. Most Carlsen studies or small final studio works that were unsold stayed with the family, eventually passed to Carlsen’s daughter-in-law, Florence B. G. S. Carlsen, who started to sell off some of the works a year or two before her own death in 1974. In 1974 Florence’s death precipitated the release of a large cache of Carlsen works into the market, most brought to market by 5 or 6 dealers who split up the estate.
