ECA notes:

– Based on email contact with Vose Gallery November 26, 2019, they could not find record of selling of this work from the gallery and based off the fact that the carved insignia of Vose Gallery is on the side vs. their standard bottom of the work, it is likely that their studio Carrig Rohane made the frame as stock and not custom for the piece. The size of the work is standard and would support this idea.

– Art Notes, Macbeth Gallery, New York, NY, “Friends of Emil Carlsen”, February, 1918, Number 65, page 1075, illustrated: b&w on 1076.
…”Friends of Mr. Emil Carlsen, and they are many, will be sorry to learn that last fall, while getting ready to come back to the city, he suffered a painful injury to his painting hand. He is only just getting back to work again, but one or two things nearing completion at the time of his accident are now here for inspection. A beautiful little woods interior is one of these, and it will be in our February exhibition. It is reproduced on the opposite page.

Later in the season we hope to have a Carlsen “one-man-show.” It will not all be new work, of course, but several canvases now nearly ready will be shown for the first time. Among them will be two or three still-lifes that promise to be among his best.”…
