– Staying in New York for about one year, Carlsen worked in a studio later used by his friend J Alden Weir (1852-1919).
– Emil attracts the attention of Mary Curtis Richardson (1848-1931), a wealthy artist and patron from San Francisco, who offered him the directorship of the San Francisco Art Association School.
– By April, 1887, Carlsen traveled to California to begin his new job.
– Carlsen joins the Bohemian Club in California.
