“Carlsen is pre-eminently a painter of still life. In this canvas he has lived up to his rightful reputation. The composition is a simple, dignified one. A piece of brocade of blue and gold as a background against which has been placed a dusty black bottle; three blue and white Chinese vases and some small shells complete the arrangement. His pictures are always decorative, but in this composition Carlsen has especially demonstrated the possibilities of still life as decoration.”
