Emil Carlsen ’81

Emil Carlsen, noted still life specialist came to America from Denmark in 1872. In 1875, he went to Paris where he studied the paintings of Jean Baptiste Simeon Chardin, an 18th-century French still life painter Carlsen’s early style was characterized by broadly painted, almost impressionistic canvases, using Chardineque
subject matter such as copper kettles, food, and porcelain. He created still lifes that were spacious in composition and delicately atmospheric. Carlsen was considered one of the finest still life painters of the time and was rivaled only by William Merritt Chase.”
