…”Emil Carlsen is represented by two canvases, In the Woods, and Summer Day, Coast of Maine.  For the landscape a simple range of color notes of silvery quality and exquisite delicacy suffices to obtain solidity and body for his forms, and to give substance and reality to his conception.  It is interesting to contrast his interpretation of the sea with that of Dougherty.  The latter is concerned with surfaces and textures with fresh, direct color, and with vigorous, spontaneous handling; while Carlsen gives expression to a more poetic vision, developing his idea by means of a color harmony where rhythm of composition and tone cooperate to reproduce in the spectator his own mood.”…
