Notes:
– Nathaniel Hawthorne signed “Carlsen del.” indicating it was drawn by Carlsen. The “Carlsen del.” signature looks like it might have been written by Etcher Stephen Alonzo Schoff. The drawing was apparently used by Schoff as a model for one of his etched portraits of Hawthorne published in “Nathaniel Hawthorne and his Wife, a Biography”, by Julian Hawthorne, Vol. 2, in 1884. The sheet is 9 x 6.5″. The drawing and etching were based on an 1852 photograph of Hawthorne.
