Description of work:
– ‘COASTAL LANDSCAPE WITH FIGURES, oil on canvas, a wide, expansive view of foragers with dog on a beach, signed lower right. Housed in likely original molded-composition gilt frame. Circa 1876. 25 1/4″ x 41 1/4″ sight, 36 1/2″ x 52 ½” OA. Painting in good visual condition with scattered minor inpainting. Frame very good with losses to ornament at one edge.Reference: See Christie’s, Lot 18, September 29, 1999 for a highly similar scene featuring the same pipe-smoking figure, dated “1876”. Provenance: Property from the estate of Ervin and Mary Ruddick, Washington, D. C. and Weyers Cave, VA.Catalogue Note: Born in Denmark, Soren Emil Carlsen (1853-1932) came to the United States in 1872 to pursue a career as an artist. Aside from several periods of study in Europe, including France, Carlsen remained in the United States throughout the remainder of his life, exhibiting frequently and widely to much acclaim.
