Historical notes:

George D. Horst was a manufacturer and banker.  Born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany on February 27, 1863, he was educated in Germany and came to the United States in 1885. Settling in Reading, he joined his brothers Peter H. Horst and the late John D. Horst and his sister, the late Louis Horst Nolde, wife of the late Jacob Nolde. In 1890, still a young man of not yet 30 years, he joined with Mr. Nolde in partnership and with him operated the hosiery business which Mr. Nolde had established at 143 Cedar Street two years previously.

In 1905 Horst married Emma Goetz.

Horst traveled in Europe and collected paintings from 1911 to 1929.

In 1932, Horst became President of the Farmers National Bank and Trust Company (later the Union National Bank).
