TRANSCRIPTION“A paragraph in the New York Times gives such unmitigated praise to a work of the California painter, Emil Carlsen, that it is reproduced here for the benefit of those who may not have seen it:

Emil Carlsen’s magnificent Moonlight on Kattegat not only gives the facts of nature with the utmost fidelity—such fidelity as no pre-Raphaelite dreamed of—but its subject is powerfully impressive. The clouds permeated with the heavy moisture of the ocean are gathered in forms that suggest Shakespear’s cloud capped towers and gorgeous palaces; the white orb of the moon and the pale blue of the gently lapping water flooded with light produce a magical effect and convey the impression of vast solitudes and distances, of tremendous natural forces and elemental energies. There is none of the darkness of night, yet all of its mystery and majesty as the ocean reveals it.”
