“Emil Carlsen
The Courtyard at Grez
1889, 25 x 30

Emigrating from Copenhagen. Denmark in 1872. Emil Carlsen came to America after studying architecture at the Danish Royal Academy. Turning to oil painting, Carlsen’s early success was founded on his broadly painted still-lifes of flowers. He later excelled with the effects of light, color and tone within his large, near-square landscape. The Courtyard at Grez is a splendid, intimate scene from the small village in France.”
