Museum to Show Noted Americans
“Twenty Small Paintings by Americans” from the permanent collection of the Department of Arts and Sciences of International Business Machines Corporation will open at the Abilene Fine Arts Museum, 762 Cedar Street, Thursday, and continue daily Tuesday through Sunday, through March 27. The public is invited to attend, said Sherwood Suter, exhibits chairman.
For opening the museum will be open 7:30-9:30 p.m. Thursday. Thereafter, it will resume normal open hours of 3-5:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays.
One artist is unknown. There is one work each for R. Julia Bach, Gifford R. Beal, Murray P. Bewley, George De Forest Brush, Emil Carlsen, Jerry Farnsworth, William J. Glackens, William M. Hart, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer, George Inness, George Benjamin Luks, Edward Moran, Grandma Moses, J. Francis Murphy, John Noble, Henry Varnum Poor, Eugene Speicher, and Frederick J. Waugh.
The twenty paintings cover 76 running feet. Though there are American paintings, Carlsen was born in Denmark, Hart in Scotland (brother of landscape painter James Hart), and Edward Moran in England.
Bewley was born in Fort Worth, and is represented in both the Fort Worth and Dallas Museums, as well as Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Dayton Art Institute, and private collections. He is represented in this show by “Patricia.”
The paintings include landscapes, still life, and portraits. Anna Mary Robertson (Grandma Moses)’ title is “Maple Sugar Orchard.” Landscapist Homer is represented by “Sunset, Saco Bay,” Moran by “Long Island Sound,” Murphy by “Autumn Landscape,” Speicher by “Trees in Bloom,” and Carlsen by “Brass Jar With Onions.”
