“The ‘Study of Baldhead Cliff’ is a charming coast scene, engaging in composition and in color.”

American Art News, “Emil Carlsen’s Paintings“, March 10, 1923.
“Delicacy of tone pervades his ‘Study of Baldhead Cliff,’ a scheme in blue and fawn and his one landscape.”

– Condition Report as of June, 2016: Oil on canvas, canvas is lined. Surface: In generally good condition aside from a few lines of craquelure at lower center. UNDER UV: No apparent in-painting.

– Frame appears to be a Wm. Goodrow Moulding Co., Chicago, IL, c.1920s.  Frame molding is branded with company name ‘Goodrow’.

– This alla prima study is of Bald Head Cliff, Ogunquit, ME.  Based on a photograph of the location in 2008, the painting was done on the craggy rocks but further out on the jetty then the photograph’s vantage point.  Carlsen would paint alla prima sitting down on a small seat with a lap travel easel.  We added one of the photos of Carlsen from the Smithsonian Archives which shows him sitting painting at Oqunquit, ME.
