ECA notes:
– Emil Carlsen’s work changed after befriending American Impressionist, J. Alden Weir [1852-1919]. Carlsen and his new family stayed with the Weirs at their country home in Windham, CT between around 1904-1906, before buying their own place in Falls Village, CT. The young girl shown in the painting may be Weir’s young daughter (who would have been thirteen or fourteen at the time), Dorothy (Weir) Young [1890-1947]. Dorothy became a well known artist and married a student of Carlsen’s, painter and sculptor, Mahonri Young [1877-1957], the grandson of the founder of the Latter Day Saints, Brigham Young. The work is in colors that Carlsen picked up from Weir and was executed in a style influenced by Weir.
– The Brett Michelle Collection, Inc., developed a relationship with Florence Carlsen’s estate and printed a series of etchings from Carlsen that were never executed previously. The portfolio of six works was produced in run of 200 and sold to mostly smaller museums. “The Brett Mitchell Collection, Inc., Cleveland, OH marketing brochure for the Emil Carlsen posthumous six etching portfolio approved by the Estate of Florence B. G. S. Carlsen“, printed by Roland Poska, Fishy Whale Press, Milwaukee, MI.
