ECA notes:

In 1906, at age 58, Carlsen secured his first major gallery exhibition at Folsom Galleries, New York, NY, planned for 1908. Carlsen showed several works previous to his exhibition with the gallery, believed to be landscapes, based on newspaper clippings. He travelled extensively in preparation for his show, producing large amounts of work visiting Denmark, England, Connecticut, Venice, and others. From 1904-1906, Carlsen spent time with his close friend, painter, Julian Alden Weir and his family at their home in Connecticut, Carlsen purchased his own home near Weir’s in the small town of Falls Village, CT in 1906. Brook Elm, ca.1906 is most likely a location close to Falls Village, Connecticut. The spot appears at least two times within the artist’s oeuvre, suggesting that it was a place that he had ready access. Carlsen has yet to discover or travel to Maine making this more likely to be Connecticut.
