Description of Work:
…”The last picture in this gallery to be described, and one of the most beautiful, is called Ripening Corn. This was painted in Connecticut. It represents a long field of corn, and to the left some tall graceful trees, whose overhanging tops cast shadows on the yellow tones of the corn, are in the foreground. Again we see a wonderful atmospheric sky. Indeed, upon entering this center gallery, where Mr. Carlsen’s works were exhibited, one felt at once—so forcibly is this quality of atmosphere impressed upon the visitor—that one could almost inhale the breath of sea air or perfume of the spring foliage.”…[Buffalo Fine Arts Academy, Albright Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY, Exhibition Catalog, “A Collection of Paintings and Sketches by Emil Carlsen from the Folsom Galleries, New York, NY“, March 18-April 13, 1910, #12, not illustrated.]

“An Interesting collection of paintings by representative contemporary artists has been on exhibition during the summer in the gallery of fine and applied arts which is part of the Museum of History, Science and Art, Exposition park, Los Angeles. Some of the painters represented are local men, while others are from New York, Philadelphia and Washington. Illustrating as it does the divergent tendencies in art at the present day, the exhibition has attracted more than usual notice.
The painters represented, and their works are:..Emil Carlsen, “Ripening Corn;”…”

…”Ripening Corn gains another graceful effect through the subtle use of line and color, for the drooping branches of a great tree point to and almost enclose in their projected angle the field of corn. The picture has a quality of air to be remembered after an especially clear and cool August afternoon.”…
