Description of work:
‘”Still life painting must be of a well understood simplicity, solid, strong, vital, unnecessary details neglected, salient points embellished, made the most of, every touch full of meaning and for the love of beauty.”
—Emil Carlsen
Roses in a Copper Bowl is a quintessential example of Carlsen’s mastery of the floral still life, a genre which catapulted him to prominence as an artist. Before painting marine landscapes, Carlsen was first known as a one of the finest still-life painters of his era. Painted in 1893 during Carlsen’s period in New York, the picture contains the element of flowers with which he had already established himself, coupled with the ‘lightness of the dark shadows’ and the texture of the copper metal. No other artist, living or dead, compares to Carlsen in his mesmerizing ability to render copper, brass and bronze of every conceivable quality and shade of color, from high polish to heavy patina. They seem to self-generate their own light source they are so vivid and dynamic. Mixed with this was Carlsen’s ability to mix brushstroke techniques from tight and sharp to lose and impressionistic; the result is a canvas with a great variety of textures and tones.’
