– The painting depicts the ingredients of a popular late 1800s drink of sangria punch. The recipe contained cognac, red wine, lemons and additional fruit. The cognac bottle matches the appearance of a Benedictine bottle with its wax seal and bottle shape. Benedictine is a sweet, herbal, cognac-based liqueur. The glass, liqueur bottle, lemons, and even the wicker wrapped wine bottle appear in other Carlsen works from that era (see related works above). Carlsen was not known as drinker or partier, tending to avoid both.
