ECA notes:
This is likely a gift to fellow painter and English portrait artist Frederic “Fred” Yates [1854-1919], London, England, UK (also Southampton, England, UK and Liverpool, England, UK).  Yates painted and lived in San Francisco from 1886 to 1900, which is likely when Emil Carlsen became friends with him.  Carlsen was back living in New York and Connecticut in 1911 and a weekday trip (several hours) to Niagara Falls in Northern New York would not be unusual.  Emil likely gave the painting to Yates when he came back to paint a portrait of US president Woodrow Wilson in 1913.  It would stand to reason that the frame is likely a choice of Yates, since it is from an London framemaker.  The frame appears to be about ca.1910s in style.  The painting obviously stayed in England and is currently being auctioned off there.
